DO YOU KNOW?

JUPITER HAMMON or PHILLIS WHEATLEY- Who is America's First Published African-American Poet?

According to some, a slave by the name of Jupiter Hammon is the first published African-American poet. He was born in October 17, 1711 to slave parents. Because he was very bright, he was taken into the house to do house work where he was taught to read and use the library. His first published work which was an 88 line broadside titled " An Evening's Thought: Salvation by Christ, with Penitential Cries" was composed by Mr. Hammon on Christmas Day, December 25, 1760 in Hartford, Connecticut and published in 1761. Other works, including " A Winter Piece" followed through 1787 and an addresses to Phillis Wheatley and "to the Negroes in New York State". According to George Wallace, the original of Jupiter Hammon's 1760 work is located in the New York Historical Society. His works include "An Essay on the Ten Virgins" 1779 and his final published work " An Address to the Negroes of the State of New York" 1787. In this publication, Hammon states that younger slaves should seek their freedom but he believed that his freedom would come in the next world-judgement day.
