TSU's Auto Shop goes Green!

Tennessee State University is committed to doing its part to protect and safeguard our environment. We are constantly seeking out best practices that will help us to become better stewards of our environment. One noteworthy initiative is greening TSU’s Auto Shop. This (4-bay) facility services about (213) state motored vehicles and 4 transportation fleet buses. State Vehicles serviced by the Auto Shop range from passenger cars, heavy duty utility trucks, bucket trucks, and grounds utility machines. One area of focus for the Auto Shop is setting high standards for pollution prevention and the recycling of automotive parts. In this effort, TSU has teamed up with several local companies to assist with carrying out our initiatives which include the following:
-
Cleaning and Degreasing - Use low-hazard, low-pollution solvents or water-based cleaning.
-
Waste Fluids - Recycle and reuse fluids whenever possible.
-
Housekeeping - Practice spill prevention, recycle oil.
-
Water Conservation - Properly maintain plumbing, install low-water use fixtures, use desert landscaping and dry-floor clean-up procedures.
-
Waste Reduction - Reduce paper use, recycle as many other materials as possible such as tires and old automotive parts, buy and use recycled products when practical.
-
Fleet-management software (Michelin One) tracks almost every aspect of facility operations, including preventive maintenance, fueling and repair records, parts inventories, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), cost-per-mile records and other reports.
-
Fuel Reduction - TBR/THEC Vehicle fuel reduction plan to reduce state wide fuel consumption.
