Brown-Daniel Library Services
Welcome to Brown-Daniel Library. The following will acquaint you with some of the available informational and circulation services that the Brown-Daniel Library provides.
FALL AND SPRING SEMESTER HOURS:
Monday-Thursday 7:30 a.m. - 11:45 p.m.
Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 P.M.
Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Sunday 2:00 p.m. - 11:45 p.m.Any change of hours will be posted on the front door of the library. This includes holidays, midterm and finals schedule and any weather-related closing.
CIRCULATION
Books may be borrowed for three weeks. Fines are 10 cents per day, per book. There is a 5 day grace period. On the sixth day after the book is due the fine will be 60 cents. Courtesy overdue book and fine notices are sent to patrons. At the end of the month, if you have overdue materials, a hold will be put on your account. You will have to clear your record before you can register for Classes or graduate. Please note that students faculty and staff must have a University ID in order to check out materials. A maximum of 10 books may be checked out at a time with your University ID. Community patrons, with a Tennessee driver's license may check out 4 books. Telephone renewals are encouraged. Reference, reserve, government documents and special collection materials are to be used in the library only. The circulation desk closes at 10:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 4:15 p.m. on Friday, and 5:45 p.m. on Saturday. Please observe these closing times and allow time for checking out materials.
RESERVE
The Reserve Department, located on the first floor, is at the circulation desk. This collection contains undergraduate level materials that are used frequently for class assignments. TSU theses and the dissertations are also found here. In order to look at materials, you must have a University ID card.
REFERENCE
This department, located on the second floor, contains a variety of online and print materials. Online resources located here include a number of computers linked to TSU book and periodical holdings from the TSU Library homepage, online databases providing general and/or specific subject information, and direct access to the Internet/World Wide Web. Examples of these resources are described in more detail below. Print materials include periodicals, indexes and abstracts, general and specialized reference books, and government documents.
These databases are presently available from virtually every computer linked to the campus network. This is not a complete listing, as databases are being added or dropped in consideration of available funding resources. Please ask a reference staff member for help with any of these databases.
Infotrac - Infotrac consists of the following databases:
Business Index ASAP - Perform in-depth research on management issues, economic indicators and business theories and practices, as well as on the activities of companies and industries worldwide. Instant access to academic and business journals with full text and images. Professional Collection - Full-text periodicals for faculty and administrators. Contemporary Literary Criticism - Select - Contemporary Literary Criticism--Select is an extensive collection of critical essays on contemporary authors. Each CLC--Select entry contains a biographical/critical introduction, listing of principal works and sources for further study. Expanded Academic ASAP - From arts and the humanities to social sciences, science and technology, this database meets research needs across all academic disciplines. Access scholarly journals, news magazines, and newspapers - many with full text and images! General Business File ASAP - Analyze company performance and activity, industry events and trends as well as the latest in management, economics and politics. Access to a combination of broker research reports, trade publications, newspapers, journals and company directory listings with full text and images available. General Reference Center Gold - A general interest database that integrates a variety of sources in one easy-to-use interface. Use General Reference Center Gold to find articles from newspapers, reference books, and periodicals, many with full-text and images. Find the latest current events, popular culture, business and industry coverage, the arts and sciences, sports, hobbies, and more. Health Reference Center Academic - Use this database to find articles on: Fitness, Pregnancy, Medicine, Nutrition, Diseases, Public Health, Occupational Health and Safety, Alcohol and Drug abuse, HMOs, Prescription Drugs, etc. The material contained in this database is intended for informational purposes only. Health and Wellness Resource Center - Use this Resource Center to find magazines, journals, newspapers, definitions, directories, and information on: Fitness, Pregnancy, Medicine, Nutrition, Diseases, Public Health, Occupational Health and Safety, Alcohol and Drug abuse, Prescription Drugs, etc. Included are links to diet, cancer, and health assessment sites as well as government databases. The material contained in this Resource Center is intended for informational purposes only. Informe - Una colección de revistas hispánicas con textos completos. Millions of full-text articles, many with images. Updated daily. National Newspaper Index - National Newspaper Index provides quick access to the indexing of America's top five newspapers in one seamless search: The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post. Junior Edition - Formerly SuperTOM Junior, this periodical database is designed for students in junior high and middle school, with magazines, newspapers and reference books (most are full-text) for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, people, government, history, sports and more. Student Edition - Formerly SuperTOM, this database is designed for high school students, with access to a variety of indexed and full-text magazines, newspapers and reference books for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, people, government, history, sports and more. What Do I Read Next? - What Do I Read Next? includes over 100,000 recommended titles, more than 60,000 plot summaries, and awards information from 562 awards, all to help users uncover new reading adventures, find long-remembered favorites, and discover award-winning titles. Search by genre, subject, author, title, series, and more. A monthly highlights page allows the user to see selections of award winners, upcoming titles, and titles that revolve around different subjects each month. Computer Database - Use this database to find computer-related product introductions, news and reviews in areas such as hardware, software, electronics, engineering, communications and the application of technology. General Business File International - Analyze company performance and activity, industry events and trends as well as the latest in management, economics and politics. Junior Edition - K12 - Formerly SuperTOM Junior, this periodical database is designed for students in junior high and middle school, with magazines, newspapers and reference books (most are full-text) for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, people, government, history, sports and more. Student Edition - K12 - Formerly SuperTOM, this database is designed for high school students, with access to a variety of indexed and full-text magazines, newspapers and reference books for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, people, government, history, sports and more. Kids InfoBits - Kids InfoBits meets the research needs of students in Kindergarten through Grade 5. It features a developmentally appropriate, visually graphic interface, a subject-based topic tree search and full-text, age-appropriate, curriculum-related magazine, newspaper and reference content for information on current events, the arts, science, health, people, government, history, sports and more. Infotrac Religion & Philosophy Custom Database - Features a custom selection of more than 250 magazines and academic journals covering religion, philosophy, and the related areas of archaeology and anthropology. Use this database not only to study theological approaches to social issues, but also to learn about the impact that religion and philosophy have had on culture throughout history, including literature, arts, and language. Coverage begins as early as 1980 for indexing and 1983 for full-text of some of the periodicals. With InfoTrac Religion & Philosophy, your research is focused to provide quick answers and reliable search results. Military & Intelligence Database - The Military and Intelligence Database periodical list has been hand-selected by Gale editors to meet those content needs. Additionally, the product includes some basic reference materials that are updated annually: The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia and The World Almanac and Book of Facts. With more than 500 titles and more than 7 million articles (80% full-text), searchers are sure to find answers to their reference questions. These databases provide citations, and in many cases, full-text articles. It is currently provided to TSU as part of the Tennessee Electronic Library network.
Subject specific databases include: AGRICOLA (agriculture), CINAHL (nursing/allied health), Disclosure (business/financial), EI Tech/ EI Village (engineering), ERIC (education) Ethnic Newswatch, Lexis-Nexis (legal, business, health, and reference information), Marcive Government Documents, MEDLINE (medical/health sciences), MLA International Bibliography, and PsycLit (psychology).
Internet Explorer - Computers in the Reference Department provide access to the Internet/World Wide Web. There are numerous sites you can explore. Some of the most popular include the TSU homepage, Yahoo (a search mechanism), and Nashville Net (a local Resource). Please limit search time, as there are usually more users than available computers. Nonacademic use of computers in this area is not encouraged. Persons will be asked to discontinue use of email, chat rooms, etc., if others are waiting, or if found in violation of the TSU Code of Academic Computing Practice and/or other acceptable use policies.
DIALOG - This online computerized bibliographic retrieval service is capable of retrieving research covering all disciplines. It accesses approximately 500 databases with millions of documents drawn from hundreds of sources. These databases are updated daily and contain the full-text of many selected journals and newspapers. Since this system must be accessed by the reference librarians, please ask for a search request form and/or schedule appointments for searches if you have not found enough information from other library resources.
Interlibrary Loan or ILL, is a service provided for students, faculty and staff of the university. If the library does not own a needed book or does not have a specific journal article, the ILL staff will request the item from another library. If there is a charge for borrowing an item, the user will have to pay the charge. Interlibrary services are provided from the Reference Department. Please use the "Online Forms" link from the library homepage to submit the request(s), or ask a reference department staff member for an interlibrary loan request form.
GATEWAY TO INFORMATION
Tennessee State University Libraries and Media Centers provide access to the Libraries' Online Catalog, other library catalogs and numerous databases. All computers in the Libraries are connected to the University Computer Network. These electronic resources may be accessed by all who have network accounts with valid passwords from off-campus sites. Search results can be printed or downloaded to computer drives/disks.
SPECIAL COLLECTIONS
Special Collections contains archival material about Tennessee State University as well as materials on African American History. Located on the third floor of the library, it is open 8:00 a.m. until 11:50 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. until 4:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. Assistance is available.
MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION
Food and drinks are not allowed in the library. Please be considerate of others and refrain from making any unnecessary noise. There is a telephone on the reserve counter for on-campus calls. Off-campus calls may be made from the pay phone in the lobby. Please note that while there may be textbooks in the collection, we do not have textbooks for current courses.
There are two typewriters and several computers for student use. They are located on the second floor. Please bring your own typing paper and/or diskette, as we are not able to provide office supplies. They are available on a first come basis.
The library is equipped with a security system and surveillance cameras. At closing time, please leave the building promptly. You will be subject to fines and disciplinary action if you leave after the security system has been set.
WILLIAMS CAMPUS LIBRARY
The library at the Williams Campus is located on the first floor. Enter on the second floor, and go downstairs, as there is no access on the first floor. Hours are: 8:00 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday; and 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sunday.
